Letting Your Sizzle Fizzle

All of us as Christians have had that moment when we were pumped up for Jesus. When we had so much energy and excitement to do God’s work that we could barely be tied down. What was going on at the time? Remember how you felt? Maybe it was returning from a camp, or a retreat. Maybe God answered a specific prayer or maybe you had the opportunity to lead someone to the Lord. Did that spiritual high fade away? When did you notice your sizzle start to fizzle? Were there certain things that happened that contributed to your loss of motivation? I am convinced as Christians that we all have these moments where we were once motivated to do something for God and then the sizzle fizzles. The scripture talks about this it’s found in the book of Isaiah.

Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:30-31

How about in 2 Thess 3:13, “And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.” What does “never tire” mean? It means having the feeling of giving up, letting Go. It also could be considered running from what God has called you to do. It’s easy to get pumped up for Jesus at times in our life. However, what can we do so that we “never tire of doing what is right” when we get back into our daily routine? I have come up with a list of things that seem to help me and I hope that they will help you.

1. Regular prayer times, mixing up the time, place, background music, etc., so that prayer doesn’t get boring after a week.
2. Regular Bible reading with a plain translation that is easy to read.
3. Bible study with a friend or accountability partner, asking each other specific questions to help motivate each other to stay strong and serve God daily.
4. Read a good scripture based book along with the Bible that helps living for God relevant to you.
5. Write in a journal what God has done in your life recently. Share that with a friend or leader at church. Refer back to it as often as you need to be reminded and inspired.

Many of us are searching for something that lasts. As the Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians, “never tire of doing right.” With God, the search is over, he’s got something that lasts. You don’t need to be something you’re not. You don’t need to change with the wind. We just need to continue to devote ourselves to our relationship with Christ, just like the first century Christians did in the book of Acts:

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42 (NIV)

MY BODY

If I were borrowing something valuable from a friend, I wouldn't dream of treating it badly; I'd be taking great care of it so he or she would know I am trustworthy and respecting their things. When I'm in a guest's home, I don't abuse it and start altering their décor. Why should I think my body is any less valuable to God?

"Honor the Lord with your body" (I Corinthians 6:20)

The Scripture says that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. We are commanded to honor the Lord with our bodies. How do you do that? You take care of it. You respect it. You treat it as valuable. You use your body to bring Him glory. When you stand strong against temptation, you are honoring the Lord with your body. When you take care of yourself by eating properly and getting enough sleep, you are honoring the Lord with your body. You are saying, "Lord, thank you for this gift of life. I am choosing to take care of myself so that I can serve you with my whole heart, mind, and strength. As you honor the Lord with your body, you will be strengthened and empowered by His peace. You'll be able to stand against temptation and walk in love this holiday season and all the days of your life!

Unhealthy lifestyle choices can cause our time in the flesh to be shortened. How we treat our bodies can affect our thoughts, mood and physical abilities; they can make us less effective for Christ. How do you treat your body? Do you treat your body as a temple for the Lord using it to serve Him and carry out His will? Are you making healthy choices that keep you in proper position to serve? I'm working on this myself and I hope you will begin to work on this too.
